PTSD Treatment for Service Members and Veterans

Recognizing the Unique Challenges of Military PTSD

Military service members and veterans experience traumatic events that civilians may never face. Combat exposure, war zone deployments, training accidents, and military sexual trauma are all uniquely associated with PTSD in the military. These experiences can lead to intense flashbacks, hypervigilance, nightmares, and other symptoms that make daily life difficult. Sadly, PTSD is more common in veterans than in civilians – nearly 1 in 3 veterans of recent conflicts (like Iraq and Afghanistan) have experienced PTSD at some point in their lives. We understand that for those who have worn the uniform, the psychological wounds of service are real, serious, and deserve specialized care.

Our Trauma-Informed, Mission-Driven Approach

At Cambridge Biotherapies, our mission is to serve those who have served us. We take a trauma-informed and compassionate approach, meaning our clinicians are trained to understand the impact of trauma and to create a safe, respectful environment for healing. From the first phone call through each treatment session, you’ll be treated with dignity, sensitivity, and respect for your military experience. Our team recognizes the strength it took to endure your experiences – and we honor that strength by providing care that empowers you to heal. We collaborate closely with military and VA providers, ensuring that our approach complements the care you’re receiving elsewhere. Whether you’re an active duty service member or a veteran, you’ll find that our treatment centers are welcoming and committed to your well-being. You took care of our country; now it’s our privilege to take care of you.

Take the First Step Now

TMS: An FDA-Approved, Duty-Friendly Treatment

One of our core treatments for PTSD is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) – a leading-edge, non-medication therapy. TMS is FDA-approved for depression and has been shown to significantly reduce PTSD symptoms as well. It uses magnetic pulses to gently stimulate brain regions involved in mood and fear responses, helping to reset patterns associated with PTSD. Because TMS is drug-free and non-invasive, it’s especially well-suited for active duty personnel who may want to avoid medication side effects or preserve deployment readiness. In fact, TMS has a favorable safety profile with no systemic side effects (no weight gain, sedation, or memory issues) – you can undergo a session and resume your normal activities immediately after. Sessions are outpatient, typically lasting around 20 minutes, and are done several times per week over a few weeks.

How TMS Fits Your Mission

Because it’s non-pharmacological, TMS won’t conflict with military duties or most medical profiles. Active duty personnel can undergo TMS while maintaining their responsibilities – you can even schedule sessions around your drill or duty hours. Our staff will work with you (and if needed, your commanding officer or medical officer) to ensure treatment scheduling is convenient and discreet.

Key Benefits of TMS for Military Patients:

  • Non-Medication & Non-Sedating: TMS involves no drugs. You remain fully alert during treatments, and there’s no impact on physical fitness or daily duty requirements (no downtime needed).
  • Proven Effective: TMS can rewire neural circuits affected by trauma. In a VA study, 65% of veterans with PTSD saw major symptom improvements, and nearly half no longer met the criteria for PTSD after a full course of TMS. These results underscore how transformative TMS can be for post-traumatic symptoms.
  • Active-Duty Accessible: TMS is one of the few advanced treatments you can receive while on active duty. TRICARE – the military health insurance – covers TMS for depression and PTSD for eligible service members and dependents. This means you can get TMS treatment with us as an active duty member without paying out of pocket, as long as you meet TRICARE’s criteria. Many military members have already used TMS to find relief from PTSD and depression without interrupting their careers.
  • Minimal Side Effects: Aside from possible mild scalp discomfort during sessions, TMS side effects are minimal. There are no medication-like side effects such as drowsiness or other risks. TMS is very safe, with the most significant rare risk being a seizure (<0.1% risk, far less common than with certain antidepressants). In our experience, patients tolerate TMS well and often report improved sleep and concentration as treatment progresses.

Spravato®: A New Option for Active Duty Service Members Battling PTSD

In addition to TMS, active duty service members may also qualify for treatment with Spravato® (esketamine) nasal spray, an FDA-approved therapy for treatment-resistant depression that shows promise for PTSD relief as well. While ketamine infusions are not typically approved during active service, Spravato offers an evidence-based alternative that’s covered by TRICARE under certain conditions.

Spravato is administered as a nasal spray under clinical supervision in our treatment center. It works differently from traditional antidepressants, acting quickly to restore balance in key brain chemicals involved in trauma, mood, and fear. Many service members report feeling improvements in depression and PTSD-related symptoms within just a few sessions.

FDA-Approved & TRICARE-Covered

Spravato is a recognized treatment for depression and may be accessible through TRICARE if you’ve tried other therapies without success. We’ll help coordinate authorization and referrals from your military medical provider if needed.

Minimal Disruption to Duty

Spravato sessions take place twice weekly during the first month, then taper off. You remain under observation for a couple of hours, but there’s no hospitalization or long recovery – most service members return to duty the next day.

PTSD Symptom Relief

Studies show that Spravato can significantly reduce PTSD symptoms when combined with therapy, especially in individuals who haven’t responded to traditional meds.

Secure & Private

Like with TMS, your treatment remains confidential. No details are shared with your command unless you choose to. Our treatment center ensures discretion and documentation for medical profiles if needed.

If you’re on active duty and struggling with depression or PTSD, and if standard medications haven’t worked, Spravato may offer a new path forward. Our team is here to guide you through the eligibility process and advocate for your access to this advanced care.

Advanced Therapies Available Post-Service

For veterans (or service members after separation or retirement), Cambridge Biotherapies offers additional leading-edge treatments beyond TMS. We recognize that PTSD can be complex, and what works for one person might not fully help another. That’s why we provide a range of advanced therapies – innovative options for those who may not have found relief with traditional therapy or medications. These therapies are available to veterans and can be pursued when permitted (for example, after active service, or with appropriate approvals if you’re still in service)

Ketamine Infusion Therapy

Ketamine is an anesthetic medicine that, at low doses, has powerful effects on mood and trauma-related symptoms. We administer ketamine via carefully controlled IV infusions. Why ketamine? Research has shown that ketamine can rapidly reduce PTSD symptoms, often within hours or days, even in individuals who have struggled for years. It’s thought to promote new neural connections and “unstick” the brain from traumatic loops. At Cambridge Biotherapies, these infusions are done in a calm, monitored setting with a clinician present. Many veterans describe a reduction in anxiety and depressive numbness after a series of infusions, allowing them to engage more with therapy and life. (Note: While ketamine is very promising, it’s not typically available to active duty service members due to military medical regulations; however, it is an option for veterans or reservists not on active orders.)

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

This is an extension of our ketamine program that combines the mind-opening effects of ketamine with guided psychotherapy sessions. In KAP, you’ll meet with a therapist during or after a ketamine session to process emotions and traumatic memories in a supported, altered state of consciousness. The ketamine can help reduce defenses and make therapy more effective, especially for processing deeply rooted trauma. Our therapists are specially trained in trauma-focused techniques to ensure that any insights or emotions that arise are handled with care and integrated into your healing journey. KAP is showing great promise for treatment-resistant PTSD, helping patients work through memories that were previously too painful or stuck.

Spravato® (Esketamine) Nasal Spray

Spravato is an FDA-approved form of ketamine (esketamine) given as a nasal spray, used for severe depression that hasn’t improved with other treatments. Many veterans with PTSD also suffer from depression; for those individuals, Spravato can be a game-changer. Administered in our treatment center under supervision, Spravato works similarly to IV ketamine in rapidly restoring glutamate balance in the brain. Early studies have indicated that esketamine can significantly reduce PTSD and depressive symptoms when combined with therapy. Spravato is only available through certified treatment centers like ours, and we follow strict protocols to monitor each session. Veterans often appreciate that Spravato is an on-label, insurance-covered option (for depression) that can indirectly help with PTSD symptoms. After service, this can be an accessible route for relief, especially if standard antidepressants haven’t worked.

These advanced therapies are typically pursued post-service because some (like ketamine or Spravato) may not be approved for active duty use at this time. However, they underscore Cambridge Biotherapies’ commitment to offering every effective tool for PTSD recovery. We stay at the forefront of psychiatric innovation so that our nation’s heroes get the best treatments available, not just the standard ones. Every treatment plan is personalized – some veterans start with TMS and later add KAP, others may do ketamine infusions alongside ongoing therapy. We will work with you to determine the right plan based on your symptoms, history, and what’s allowed in your current stage of service or post-service life.

A Trusted Resource for Military Providers

Cambridge Biotherapies has become a trusted resource for military and VA providers in Massachusetts seeking specialized care for their patients. We are proud to have earned the confidence of clinicians within the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs systems by consistently providing safe, effective treatments in a trauma-informed setting. Military psychiatrists and therapists refer to us because they know we deliver results while respecting the unique needs of veterans. We maintain open communication (with appropriate consent) with referring providers – whether it’s a base mental health clinic or a VA hospital – to ensure continuity of care.

Why Military Providers Trust Us

  • Expertise in Trauma: Our clinical team includes psychiatrists and therapists who specialize in trauma and PTSD. We understand military culture and the nuances of combat stress, which helps us connect with service members on a personal level.
  • Proven Outcomes: With modalities like TMS and ketamine, we’ve helped many veterans who hadn’t improved with standard VA care. Our outcomes – measured by reductions in PTSD symptoms and improvements in depression and functioning – demonstrate that we provide effective care that complements what military medical centers offer.
  • Collaboration: We view ourselves as partners in the mission to heal PTSD. If you’re a military or VA provider referring a patient, you can expect timely updates, thorough discharge summaries, and coordination on medication or follow-up needs. Our goal is to integrate with your treatment plan, not replace it.
  • Mission Alignment: Like the military medical corps, we put the patient (the service member/veteran) first. We share the mission of restoring psychological health so that warriors can lead fulfilling lives. This mission-driven ethos resonates with military providers who know their patients are in good hands with us.

Cambridge Biotherapies is also experienced in the logistics that matter to military referrals – from handling insurance authorization to documenting progress for VA disability or fitness evaluations as needed. We adhere to all privacy regulations (HIPAA and beyond) to protect sensitive information. In short, we strive to be the “force multiplier” for military mental health: extending the range of what base or VA clinics can offer, and doing so in a way that earns trust.

Accessing Care via VA Community Care and TRICARE

We believe that cost or bureaucracy should never stand in the way of a veteran or service member getting help. Cambridge Biotherapies is set up to work with both the VA Community Care program and TRICARE military insurance, making it easier for you to receive treatment here through your benefits.

VA Community Care

If you are a veteran receiving care at the VA but need a service the VA can’t provide quickly or locally (for example, specialized TMS or ketamine treatment), you may be eligible for referral to us through VA Community Care. The VA’s Community Care program allows veterans to see approved outside providers when the VA cannot provide the required care in a timely manner (Community Care Home). Cambridge Biotherapies is an approved community provider, so if your VA psychiatrist or primary care provider refers you to us, the VA will cover the costs. We have established relationships with the VA Community Care Network (through contractors like TriWest and Optum), and we can guide you and your VA clinician through the referral process. What this means: You can receive our innovative PTSD treatments with VA paying for it, as long as the referral is authorized. This typically involves your VA provider submitting a referral request citing medical necessity (for example, PTSD not improving with available treatments). Once approved, we coordinate with the VA on scheduling and billing, so you can focus solely on getting better.

TRICARE

For active duty service members, reservists, and military family members, we accept TRICARE insurance (as well as TriCare partners like TriWest) for covered treatments. TMS is covered by TRICARE for certain conditions, including depression and PTSD, usually after standard treatments have been tried. We will help verify your TRICARE coverage and obtain any needed authorization or referral from your military primary care manager. If you’re active duty, you may need a referral from your on-base medical provider to see us (depending on your TRICARE plan), but once that’s obtained, TRICARE can pay for your TMS sessions here. For family members or retirees on TRICARE, we handle the pre-authorization and billing just like any other specialist visit.

Important: Receiving TMS or therapy with us does not typically affect your duty status – it’s like any other specialty medical appointment. Your chain of command does not get details of your treatment, ensuring your privacy. And if you’re concerned about stigma, note that seeking non-pharmacological treatment for PTSD is often viewed positively as taking proactive care of your health. Many commanders support their troops getting TMS because it can enhance readiness and resilience.

We also accept a range of other insurance plans, and offer guidance for out-of-network reimbursement if needed. For veterans not using VA care and without TRICARE, we’ll work with whatever insurance you have, or discuss financing options so that cost isn’t a barrier.

How to Get Started: Self-Referral or Provider Referral

We welcome both individuals seeking help and health professionals referring their military patients. Reaching out for PTSD treatment can feel daunting, so we’ve made the process as simple and supportive as possible.

Self-Referral (Veterans or Service Members):

You do not need a formal referral to contact Cambridge Biotherapies. If you’re a veteran or service member struggling with PTSD (with or without depression), you can reach out directly to us by phone or through our website. Our intake coordinator – who is sensitive to military culture and confidentiality – will gather some basic information and schedule you for a no-charge consultation with one of our clinicians. This initial consult (which can often be done by phone or video if you prefer) lets us understand your history and symptoms. We’ll explain treatment options in plain language, answer your questions, and together decide on a plan. If you choose to move forward, we handle all the insurance verification and paperwork. For example, we’ll confirm if TRICARE or VA Community Care can be used and take the steps to get approval. You’ve been through enough – we aim to remove bureaucratic hassle from your plate. Within a short time, you could be starting treatments like TMS without jumping through hoops. To get started, simply call us or fill out the contact form on our website; let us know you’re a veteran or active service member, and we’ll prioritize your appointment.

Provider Referral (Military or VA Providers):

If you are a healthcare provider (e.g. a military psychologist, psychiatrist, primary care physician, or a VA clinician) and want to refer a patient to Cambridge Biotherapies for PTSD treatment, we make it easy to do so. You can refer patients to us through the VA Community Care program (if you’re a VA provider, submit a referral for specialty care to “Cambridge Biotherapies” via your usual process), or simply by contacting our office. We have a dedicated fax and email for referrals (available on our For Providers page) where you can send a referral note or relevant records. Upon receiving a referral, our team will reach out to the patient within 1-2 business days to set up the initial consultation. We will also coordinate any required authorizations with TRICARE or VA. Rest assured, we will keep you in the loop (with the patient’s consent) – providing updates on treatment progress and outcomes. Our goal is to create a seamless extension of the care you’re already providing. Many referring providers appreciate that we handle the insurance and scheduling logistics, and return the patient to them with improvements that allow for better overall therapy or reintegration.

Note: We are happy to discuss potential cases informally – if you’re a provider unsure if a patient qualifies for TMS or ketamine, you can call our physicians for a peer-to-peer discussion.

Quick Response and Support: Whether you self-refer or are referred by a provider, expect a warm and prompt response. We know that when someone has finally decided to seek help, speed matters. We strive to schedule new military/veteran patients as quickly as possible – often within a week for a consult. If you’re in crisis or urgent need, we’ll do everything we can to expedite care (while also recommending you stay safe and utilize emergency resources like the Veterans Crisis Line if needed). Our office team is knowledgeable about military protocols; if documentation is needed for command or VA purposes (for example, proof of attendance, or treatment recommendations), we can provide that with your permission.

A Welcoming, Respectful Environment

Walking into a mental health treatment center can be intimidating for anyone – especially for someone used to the military’s culture of self-reliance. That’s why we’ve put great thought into creating an environment at Cambridge Biotherapies that puts military service members and veterans at ease. Our treatment center spaces are quiet, private, and adorned with calming decor (no clinical fluorescent lights or hospital clatter). From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted warmly and never judged. Many patients tell us they felt “heard and understood” here in a way they hadn’t elsewhere. That sense of safety is by design: when you feel comfortable, treatment works better.

We also maintain strict confidentiality. We know active duty members might worry about their command finding out about treatment. Unless you choose to share information, everything at Cambridge Biotherapies stays between us and you (with the only exceptions being standard safety situations). Even if the military referred you, the details of your sessions are private medical information. Our electronic records are secure, and we will coordinate with other providers only with your consent.

Respect and Honor: Fundamentally, we hold deep respect for those who have served. This is reflected in how we address you, how we schedule appointments (working around drill weekends, for example), and how we incorporate your values and goals into treatment. Our hope is that every veteran or service member who comes to us not only finds relief from PTSD, but also feels valued and empowered in the process. You answered the call to serve your country – now we are here to serve you with the highest standard of care.
